ABOUT
Daniel Kownacki is a chartered architect and freelance designer based in London, United Kingdom.
Believing good design can enrich the way we live whatever the context or budget, his work with space, form, materials and light seeks to enhance the environment, unlock potential and maximise value.
Having set up in practice in 2016, Daniel is able to provide architectural services from concept design to the construction process, and various other services related to this role. In previous employment, he gained experience across a variety of sectors, ranging from master planning to individual homes and historic buildings.
Daniel studied architecture at the University of Bath, where he was a joint winner of the Sir Basil Spence Prize in 2004, and spent an exchange year at 'INSA' Strasbourg in France. Having completed his professional studies in 2010, he since joined the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland.
SERVICES
ARCHITECTURAL
Full or partial stage-by-stage architectural services can be provided from concept design to involvement in the construction process, following the structure set out in the RIBA Plan of Work. Typical services include existing surveys, feasibility studies, planning applications, detailed design, tendering, building control applications, and assistance throughout construction contracts.
CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION
With experience of administering commercial and domestic construction contracts, Contract Administration services can be provided to set up appropriate documentation and act as Contract Administrator throughout building works.
PRINCIPAL DESIGNER
Under the Construction Design Management (CDM) 2015 regulations in the UK, employers for most construction projects have a responsibility to appoint a 'Principal Designer' to oversee the management of health and safety throughout the design process.
PARTY WALLS
Party wall surveying services to negotiate agreements with the owners of neighbouring properties in line with the UK 'Party Wall etc. Act 1996'.
HISTORIC BUILDING CONSERVATION
Assistance can be provided for conservation works and designing in the context of listed buildings. Whilst at David Morley Architects in 2005-2007, Daniel assisted with the bold conversion of Velvet Mill in Bradford for Urban Splash. At St. Ann's Gate Architects in 2010-2012, he assisted the Cathedral Architects of Gloucester and Westminster Cathedrals with conservation projects and contemporary additions.
URBAN & LANSCAPE DESIGN
Experience of urban masterplanning has included academic thesis projects, and whilst at David Morley Architects in 2008, Daniel helped coordinate a high level masterplan for St. Mary's Hospital and the Paddington Basin in central London.
INTERIOR & BESPOKE FURNITURE DESIGN
Whilst clients often opt for installing off-the-shelf fixtures and fittings, sometimes the opportunity arises to assist with bespoke designs and internal fit outs. In 2015, Daniel collaborated with Studio Ben Allen on the commercial fit out of a large office for Cundall, a multi-disciplinary engineering firm in the City of London which was the first project in Europe to achieve the 'WELL' standard for healthy buildings.
ARTWORKS & VISUALISATION
Whether to assist in the visualisation of architectural proposals, or as independent artistic endevours, Daniel has a passion for the visual arts and loves to sketch.
